Summary: Iranian authorities arrested eight women models for posting photos on Instagram without hijab
Iran recently arrested eight women for online modelling that has been deemed “un-Islamic,” according to the prosecutor of Tehran’s cybercrimes court. The women were targeted for modelling without headscarves in pictures that were then posted on Instagram and other social media sites.
The arrests were part of a larger investigation that focused on 170 women involved in online modelling, including 59 photographers and makeup artists, 58 models, and 51 fashion salon managers and designers. Twenty-nine women were contacted police, and 21 complied with police requests and avoided arrest. The eight arrested women have not yet been identified.
Tehran’s prosecutor Javad Babaei announced the arrests Sunday during a state television programme broadcast and he said the modelling agencies in Iran have been “making and spreading immoral and un-Islamic culture and promiscuity” through social media posts. Babaei also added that fresh operations would begin soon.
